About Folk Music
When we think of folk music, we think of people like Woody Guthrie, and the unmistakable Bob Dylan.
Some of the greatest songwriters to ever put pen to paper came out of folk music, and it's no accident.
The reason so many beloved songwriters came out of folk music is because of its narrative storytelling style.
It's that storytelling quality that makes folk music so suitable for all kinds of video.
A Brief History Lesson
The term folk music as we know it was taken from the German word volk, which means the people.
When it refers to the people, it means the common people, not the elite.
In 1800s Europe, the concert music of the time was only accessible to the few who could afford to listen to it.
If you couldn't afford to go to theatres back then, you were likely dealing with extreme poverty and every misfortune that can bring.
So, people started to tell the stories of their struggles through song and (volk) folk music was born.
Nowadays, folk music is intrinsically linked to the plight of the average Joe.
Keeping it Simple
Folk music can sound incredibly intricate at times, with beautiful fingerpicked guitar playing.
However, at its core, it's harmonically very simple, and that lets the story take the lead.
In fact, it would be rare for a folk song to involve more than four chords.
If anyone is wondering, those four chords are usually I - IV - V - VI, played in various patterns.
How to Use Folk Music in Your Video
As we just covered, folk music tends to be about struggle and adversity.
It's often something that will leave you deep in thought of something that will make you want to stand up and protest against injustice.
But, there are different ways that it can be used in your video to great effect.
Let's take a look at some specific examples.
Playing the Sympathy Card
If you have a film that details any kind of tragedy or adversity, folk music is a great device to help the audience connect to the character.
For example, if your main character is grieving and dealing with loss, folk music can put words to the emotion being felt by your subject.
Using it in this way might seem a bit crude, but it's incredibly effective and makes sure no emotion is lost in translation.
Instrumental folk music can be beneficial if you have a scene where your main character has a lot to say.
In this situation, you don't need lyrics to explain the emotion; the video is doing that; you just need those simple melancholy chords underneath to set the tone.
Making Them Laugh
The adversity associated with folk music might seem like it has no place in comedy, but when used correctly, it's gold!
Let's say you have a character who is down on their luck and going through that why is it always me phase.
Folk music can add legitimacy to their struggles even though you can't help but laugh.
There is Always Hope
Folk music tends to come with we will perceiver attitude, like things are tough, but we will get there.
If you are finding music for a scene where you want to be clear; all hope is gone; folk music might not be for you.
