Need Epic Music for Your Creative Project?
There are a lot of opinions on what epic music actually is.
Some people will tell you that it's orchestral music, more specifically a chamber or symphony orchestra.
Others will tell you that it doesn't matter what instruments are used; it just has to be loud.
The truth is that these opinions are all true in part, but not entirely. For what it's worth, our belief is that epic music has to take you on a journey.
It has to be bold and unapologetic, and that doesn't just mean loud, it means making bold musical choices.
Every epic movie has epic music, and whether you realized at the time or not, the film wouldn't be epic without it.
Dare to be Bold
When we talk about making bold musical choices, there are a lot of things that you can do.
One of the best ways to be bold is to use music that offers dramatic contrasts. An epic movie always has a significant transition in the story where good triumphs over evil.
It doesn't have to be good versus evil in the biblical or superhero sense; it could be the protagonist's life turning from negative to positive. There is always a defining moment when the tide changes, and it's very powerful.
For this moment to have the desired impact, the transition in the music should subconsciously tell the viewer to brace themselves. The typical feeling you want the music to create here is one of defiance, hope, belief, or justification.
You can also be bold in your instrumentation; orchestral music is fantastic for epic movies, we can't stress that enough, but you don't need to go that route.
If you do go that route, there are no rules to say you can't mix orchestral instruments with synths, or shredding guitars. There are no rules, but you can check out these top tips for creating epic music.
Be Dynamic
We talk about the importance of dynamics in any music, but it's vitally important here.
If your music is without dynamics, then it tells no story, it's the same intensity level from start to finish. It's the dynamics that will take the audience on a journey through various emotions.
While it's true that much of the emotion comes from the harmonic choices (the chords), it's the dynamics that create both the calm and the storm.
Learn From the Masters
When you think about epic movie scores, names like Hans Zimmer, John Williams, and the late Ennio Morricone come to mind.
It's a good idea to watch some of the great epic movies and listen to how these legends use music.
Look out for timing choices, when they introduce harmony, melody, and when they make use of silence. In an epic movie, silence is as powerful as sound, but only in the right places.
A great source of inspiration is how Hans Zimmer put together his iconic soundtrack for the movie Interstellar.
Once you have an idea of where you are heading with your score, it's time to audition tracks with our quite brilliant video preview tool.
Please remember when you audition tracks, they won't be mixed specifically for your scene, and this is very important for an epic.
After you find the perfect track, you might need to make cuts or enhance dynamics as you mold it to your scene.
