Electronic music is one of the most versatile and often utilized musical genres for film.
One of the main reasons that electronic music is so commonly used in film is that it's so widely accessible.
One person with a synthesizer or computer can create a sound that is larger than a chamber orchestra. If you think your video needs an electronic vibe, then read on; we've got what you need.
What is Electronic Music?
It's often said that electronic music is any that is recorded using electronic/digital equipment.
However, by that rule, almost all music today would be considered to be electronic music.
Instead, we would define it as music that is made with electronic instruments like digital, analog, or virtual synthesizers.
Rather than think about the recording process, it's easier to think of non-acoustic instruments.
Electronic music is a broad term; it houses many sub-genres, and we don't have time to cover them all here.
But, you should check out a brief history of electronic music to get a better idea of where it all started.
What Kind of Videos Work Best with Electronic Music?
We mentioned earlier that electronic music is extremely versatile, so it works well with many video/film types.
We like to think that music has no limitations, but acoustic instruments, even the very best musicians, only have two hands.
With synthesizers and computers, there really are no limitations. You can create arpeggios or sequences that might be otherwise impossible for one musician and one instrument to play.
Beyond stretching the physicalities of musicianship, you can also bend and modulate notes in ways you can't with acoustic instruments.
Despite the versatility, there are a few areas we can take a look at where electronic music never fails.
Sci-Fi and Futuristic Movies
Although the first Moog synthesizer came around in 1964, this approach to music will always seem modern.
In the Sci-Fi genre, electronic music gives you the opportunity to use seemingly other-worldly sounds to make the film's context seem more real.
There's no better example of this than the soundtrack to the 1956 classic, Forbidden Planet.
Not only a great soundtrack but a defining moment in the history of electronic music.
Similarly, with futuristic movies, electronic music helps the viewer accept the film's context as reality.
It doesn't need to be a particular location; it's more about the years, technology, or way of living being further advanced than real life (at the time of making).
Atmospheric Movies
We are particularly thinking of films where music is very minimal; electronic music often does this better than other genres.
Electronic sound-design is as much about creating textures as it is about harmony and melody.
That makes it fantastic to embody the sleek, cool feel of LA at night or the grittiness of a dystopian landscape through granular synthesis. The 2007 movie, Drive, is the perfect example.
Defining Eras
Due to the extent of electronic music and its sub-genres, it's possible to use it to connect to various periods in time and different age groups.
A movie where the main characters are teens might be a project where you want the soundtrack to represent the characters' own playlist.
Electronic music such as EDM, Dubstep, House, and so on can do this.
It can also represent more specific periods than many other genres.
For example, you have the birth and evolution of synths through the 60s/70s. Next, you have the synth-pop of the 80s, techno, and dance music in the 90s; it doesn't stop.
