Need Children Music for your Project?
Finding the right Children music for your project can often seem complicated, but it doesn't have to be.
Ironically, one of the main reasons that it seems complicated is that many people assume the music must be simple.
In reality, writing or choosing music for kids gives you far more creative freedom than you might expect.
Kids react instinctively to everything and without inhibition. Don't get caught up in what the music is; focus on how it will make them feel.
It has to be Simple, Right?
Let's put to rest the idea that kids' music has to be simple; it absolutely doesn't.
Now, just to be very clear, that doesn't mean you should aim to make it complicated either.
It means as long as it feels right, it doesn't matter if it's simple or not.
If you are a musician, you might analyze the music as you listen to it; picking out chords, time signatures, and anything out of the ordinary.
As an adult non-musician, you might do the same, albeit to a lesser extent. Kids don't do that; they just listen and feel the music.
It's a trait that most of us musicians would love to get back.
It's common knowledge that kids absorb knowledge like a sponge, and the same can be said about music.
Listening to music often is proven to enhance brain development in children, and that's why they are able to feel even complex music. Let's take a couple of examples, one simple and one more complex.
Take the theme song for Spongebob Squarepants, one of the most popular cartoons ever.
It's almost like a hoedown, where the lyrics ask a question, and the kids scream the answer.
There is no real melody as such; you could almost sing it all on one note.
But, it works incredibly well because it engages the kids. It instantly sounds like a fun adventure, so it doesn't need to be more complicated than it is.
Sesame Street has produced some of the best ever kids' music, and none more so than a personal favorite, Pinball Number Count.
The time signature in this tune alternates between 3/8, 7/8, 11/8, and 4/4. It sounds even more complicated because it changes so frequently, but the groove is so good that kids just cling to it.
This track is a prime example of music being used to educate kids as well as sound good.
So, focus on how it feels first, not the genre, style, chords, etc.
Not too Subtle
As an extension to what we've already said about kids reacting instinctively, you should remember there is far less middle ground with kids.
Music for movies use lots of subtle undertones to create tension and anxiety.
Kids' music tends to be more direct; if the good guys are winning, make it happy; if the cartoon villain is near, make it scary.
Don't waste much time building tension and suspense; if kids' aren't sure how they feel, they lose interest.
Know your Audience
Knowing your audience is vital to choosing the right royalty-free music for any project.
Although, when it comes to kids' music, people often forget part of their audience; the parents.
It pays to remember that parents spend a lot of time watching shows with their kids.
While the kids' are your main concern, it doesn't hurt to keep parents interested in your musical choices, too.
After all, that means they are more likely to spend time listening with their children.
Once you know your audience, our library of royalty-free music has what you need.
