Need Blues Music for your Project?
Blues music isn't just a genre that defined an era; it's a genre that directly influenced everything that came after it.
we talk about music being powerful, it's no more apt than when we talk about blues music. Yet, the roots of this genre are built on its simplicity.
What is Blues Music?
Blues music came from suffering and resilience, whether relating to social injustice or more personal troubles.
Going back to the Underground Railroad days, spiritual songs like Wade in the Water were sung to motivate and keep spirits high.
A little further down the line, it was artists like Muddy Waters, singing the blues while working in the cotton fields of Mississippi.
Then, the blues could be singing about a better tomorrow or your woman leaving you, but it was always some kind of hardship.
That's why people say you've got the blues if you are sad, but it's about what you do with it.
Thankfully, artists like Muddy Waters turned it to song; otherwise, we might not have bands like The Rolling Stones, amongst others.
We say blues music is built on simplicity because there are only two things it needs; a sad story and honesty.
Everything else is secondary. So much so that the most universally popular kind of blues music is the 12-bar blues.
The 12-bar blues is a simple looped pattern involving only three chords in its most basic form. Some of the most loved blues players went a lifetime without playing more than three chords.
Take a guitarist like BB King, sure he can play some technically masterful licks, but he doesn't often.
Think of it like this; say what needs to be said, no more, and mean what you say.
If you've got the blues, our collection of amazing royalty-free music will cheer you up.
Times are Tough all Over
As we covered above, the blues comes from struggle and perseverance. So there's no better music to capture the personal hardships of your film's characters.
These troubles can belong solely to a character, or they can be a character's personal reaction as part of a wider movement.
Blues music is sometimes used for comedic effect, too.
For example, if you have a comedy scene where someone is unnecessarily feeling sorry for themselves, some blues can highlight that punchline.
Home of the Blues
Some amazing cities around the world played a unique role in birthing the blues and spreading it to the masses.
Sometimes the music just has to connect to the location, rather than a specific story point or character trait, to add some authenticity.
If your location fits the bill, some blues music could be a great option.
It's my only Vice
Blues music may be born out of hard times, but it's involved in a whole lot of mischief along the way.
It's easy to find a blues song about a wife leaving her husband. It is not as easy to find one where the singer talks about cheating at every stop on the road with the band. Not all blues players.
The point is, Blues music has been in the sound of many questionable activities over the decades.
Think of the prohibition era, illegal alcohol, gambling, after-hours clubs, and so on. It has that rebellious, defiant attitude that Rock music later inherited.
If you have a film with a somewhat rebellious storyline, it might need the blues. It doesn't need to be set in days gone by either, Blues music stands the test of time, even in a modern film.
